Tilburg University is one of the two universities in Brabant. Eindhoven University of Technology is the other Brabant university. Tilburg University is a Catholic university and was founded in 1927. The university specializes in humanities and social sciences and the institution’s motto is ‘Understanding Society’. Tilburg University has five faculties in 2020 and together these faculties offer more than twenty bachelor’s programs.
Tilburg University
Tilburg University is a Dutch university. The university was founded in 1927 and has since had different names such as the Catholic University of Brabant and the University of Tilburg. Since 2010, the institution has been called Tilburg University to reflect its international character. The institution offers its students scientific education through various bachelor’s and master’s programs.
Why study at Tilburg University?
Choosing a course can be difficult because of the enormous range on offer. Each university has its own range of courses. Some courses, such as psychology, are offered at many different universities. Students can choose Tilburg University because of its connected campus. The various buildings are located at one location in the city of Tilburg. Furthermore, a reason for choosing Tilburg University may be that student rooms in Tilburg are relatively cheap, compared to other student cities. Finally, there are certain studies that are only offered in Tilburg. An example of this is the study Organization Sciences. This can also be a reason to study at Tilburg University.
The faculties
Tilburg University has five faculties in total and together the faculties offer more than twenty bachelor’s degrees. Although all faculties have English names, both Dutch and English-language studies are offered. The five faculties of Tilburg University and the bachelor’s programs offered there in 2020 are:

Tilburg School of Economics and Management
This faculty focuses on the field of economics and business. The faculty is very internationally oriented and offers three English-taught courses. The three English-taught courses are Economics, International Business Administration and Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation. In addition, there are also four Dutch-language courses, namely Fiscal Economics, Economics and Business Economics, Business Economics and Economics and Operational Research. All courses have in common that economics is central to every course.
Economics
During the Economics study, students learn about micro and macro economics. After this study, graduate students can, for example, work as economists within organizations in the Netherlands or abroad.
Business Administration
The International Business Administration course focuses on the functioning of companies. After this course, graduate students generally end up in the management team of a company.
Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation
Just like the Business Administration course, the Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation course is also focused on the functioning of organizations. The difference between the two courses is that the Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation course mainly emphasizes the innovation of processes within an organization. Many graduate students end up in the management team of an organization.
Fiscal economy
In addition to economics, law is also central to the study of fiscal economics. After this study, many graduate students become tax advisors or, for example, end up in tax departments of international organizations.
Economics and Business Economics
The study of Economics and Business Economics trains students to solve complex economic issues. The study of Economics and Business Economics is largely focused on the economy as a whole. Positions that graduate students can hold within companies are, for example, tax advisor or economist.
Business economics
Business Economics students are also trained to solve complex economic issues. Compared to the study of Economics and Business Economics, the study of Business Economics mainly focuses on processes within an organization, such as a reorganization or a merger. This study is therefore less broad than the study of Economics and Business Economics. For example, graduate students can become accountants or marketing managers.
Econometrics and Operational Research
The Econometrics and Operational Research course bridges the gap between economic problems and mathematics. After this training, graduate students have both economic and mathematical knowledge and can, for example, solve problems with planning or production flows.
Tilburg Law School
This faculty is committed to training students to solve social problems within law and administration. Tilburg Law School has two English-language courses called Global Law and Data Science. The Dutch-language courses within this faculty are Law, Corporate Law, Tax Law and Public Administration.
Global Law
The Global Law course is very internationally oriented and students therefore also learn about the legal systems of different countries. In addition to being a lawyer in the Netherlands, graduate students can also become a lawyer abroad.
Data Science
The Data Science course is mainly aimed at solving problems within society and involves technical skills and/or legal knowledge where necessary. Graduate students can work as a data scientist within an organization, for example.
Law
During the Law course, students learn everything about the legal system of the Netherlands. After studying law, most students end up in traditional legal professions. Think of professions such as lawyer or judge.
Corporate law
Compared to the Law course, the Corporate Law course is much more specific and only focuses on legal matters within organizations. Many graduate students become lawyers within an organization.
Tax law
The tax law course bridges the gap between the disciplines of law and economics. Students who follow this course are trained as financial advisors and can work at, for example, the Ministry of Finance or the Tax Authorities. In addition, students can also choose to become a tax advisor.
Public Administration
The study of public administration trains students to solve issues within public organizations such as the government. Graduate students often have to deal with various social issues, such as the integration of asylum seekers.
Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences
This faculty offers traditional courses with a social character, such as Psychology and Sociology. In addition, there are also various multidisciplinary studies and these studies not only have a social character but also an economic character. Multidisciplinary studies therefore use different disciplines. The four English-taught courses of this faculty are Global Management of Social Issues, Human Resource Studies, International Sociology and Psychology. The four Dutch-language courses are Organization Sciences, Personnel Sciences, Psychology and Sociology.
Global Management of Social Issues
The Global Management of Social Issues course is an internationally oriented course in which students are trained to solve international social problems. After this training, many different types of positions are possible, such as HR manager, Project Manager or consultant.
Human Resource Studies
The multidisciplinary Human Resource Studies course uses the disciplines of economics, law, psychology and management sciences. After their studies, graduate students will generally commit themselves to creating an effective human resources policy within an organization.
International Sociology
In addition to the Global Management of Social Issues study, International Sociology is also an internationally oriented course within this faculty and studies the relationship between individuals and different groups. After completing the International Sociology course, graduate students can, for example, become consultants within an organization. A large number of graduate students also go on to work as researchers or teachers.
Psychology
The Psychology course is the English-language variant of the Dutch-language psychology course and studies human behavior. After studying Psychology, graduate students can, for example, work as psychologists at home and abroad.
Organization
The study of Organization Sciences mainly focuses on the functioning of an organization in general. After studying Organization Studies, students can find themselves in various positions within an organization. Organization scientists often advise organizations on processes within an organization such as an acquisition or a merger.
Personnel science
The Organization Studies and Personnel Sciences courses have many similarities. Nevertheless, the Human Resources course mainly focuses on cases related to personnel. Graduate students often end up in the HR department of a company.
Sociology
The traditional Sociology course studies human behavior within groups. After completing the Sociology course, students can work at the municipality or within an organization. Graduate students can also work as a social sciences teacher, for example.
Psychology
Another traditional course within the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences faculty is the Psychology course. Students who follow the Psychology course study human behavior, just like Sociology students. Although the Sociology course looks at human behavior within groups, the Psychology course looks at human behavior of individuals. Many graduate students go on to work as psychologists.
Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences
This faculty has existed since 2007 and now offers three courses. All three courses have in common that the courses are very modern. Important themes within this faculty include globalization, artificial intelligence and digital societies. Two English-language studies within this faculty are Cognitive Science and Artificial intelligence and Online Culture: Art, Media and Society. Communication and Information Sciences is the Dutch-language course within Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences.
Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence
The Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence course trains students to understand the functioning of intelligent systems after their studies and to innovate where necessary. Many graduate students go on to work as consultants for companies.
Online Culture: Art, Media and Society
In addition to the Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence course, the Online Culture: Art, Media and Society course is also a very modern course. Students mainly learn about digital culture and media channels. Graduate students mainly end up in the communications and media sector or the cultural sector.
Communication and information sciences
Communication and Information Sciences is the Dutch course within Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences and in this course students learn to analyze and solve issues in the field of communication and information. Graduate students can hold many different positions. For example, they can end up in the marketing department of a company, but also work as a journalist.
Tilburg School of Catholic Theology
Within this faculty, students are trained to take on an ecclesiastical, scientific or social position that deals with existential questions, questions of meaning or faith. This faculty works closely with the Utrecht Faculty of Catholic Theology. The faculty in Tilburg offers two courses, namely the English-language Theology course and the Dutch-language Philosophy course. If a student wants to follow the Dutch-language variant of the Theology course, this is possible in Utrecht.
Theology
Students who study Theology learn about the Christian faith and also learn languages such as Latin, Hebrew and Greek. Graduate students often become chaplains in institutions such as prison or hospital.
Philosophy
During the Philosophy study, students discuss and analyze the questions of meaning in life that prevail within society. Graduate students generally end up in government or business. In addition, some graduate students become journalists.
