IQ is an abbreviation for intelligence quotient and it is a measurement of how intelligent someone is. IQ is often talked about and we also have the national IQ test on television every year. Is this reliable? How does IQ work and how can you measure it? How do you know how smart you actually are?

IQ is a measurement to see how intelligent someone is. This is measured using an intelligence test, which consists of various parts. Think of language, arithmetic and logical thinking. This means you can also see how much you score per individual component. IQ has been around for a very long time. In the nineteenth century, tests were already developed to see how intelligent someone was. In 1905, a Frenchman developed a test for children and it turned out to be in great demand. The American Henry Goddard eventually coined the term intelligence quotient. The calculation of the IQ test has changed several times over the years.
What does the score mean?
The IQ score says a lot about your intelligence. If you have an IQ of 90 to 110, you are well within the average range. With an IQ of 80 to 90 you are below average and with an IQ of 80 or lower you are mentally retarded. If you have an IQ of 110 to 120, you are above average. With a score of 120-130 we call it gifted and if your score is higher than 130, you are gifted. The score of an IQ test does not determine your intelligence. After all, someone can also have a bad day and therefore score less well. Consider, for example, a blackout. It may also be that someone is not there with their thoughts. You should really assume this when you take a test. Some people give too much weight to their score, while sometimes this is completely unjustified.
Who is an IQ test for?
Anyone can take an IQ test, but there is often a reason for it. For example, to see whether you are gifted or gifted. You may also have to take an IQ test for a special education, although this does not happen very often. Sometimes an IQ test can also be part of an extensive psychological test, to find out what is wrong with someone.
Where do you have the IQ measured?
You can take a good IQ test from a professional, such as a psychiatrist. There are also IQ tests available online, but these are often much less extensive and therefore less reliable. Every year there is a test on television at the BNN. This test can give a good indication of your IQ, but cannot be compared to a real IQ test. This is because you take the test together with your family, for example. You might hear some answers from your sister, or you might get distracted because you’re having a drink. In addition, the test on television is a lot less extensive than a real IQ test and therefore the measurement can also be a lot less reliable.
Children?
An IQ test can already be done on children. In fact, the best age for a test is between four and nine in children. By testing children, for example, it can be determined whether a gifted child is present.
