The Bible in practice: confidence in life

Worrying is human and you often see ‘bears in your path’. Or are you still boundlessly confident and do you still feel safe like a child who knows that he is taken care of? Do you have confidence in God like children do in their father and mother or do you want to keep everything in your own hands? What does the Bible say about trust? What do Paul and David advise about trusting life?

Confidence in life according to Paul

Paul wrote specific letters to different population groups. Paul’s Letter to the Romans (Romans 8:14-17) addresses the question of why God gave his Spirit:
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. For you have not received the spirit of bondage to fear again, but you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba, Father. That Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. Now if we are children, we are also heirs: heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; for if we share in his sufferings, it is to share also in his glorification.

A possible explanation for this is :
We stand in such a confidential relationship with God as children do with the father that we call him daddy, abba. As a child of God you do not have to be afraid and therefore do not have to worry or worry.

Confidence in life according to David

In Psalm 131 (Psalm 131: -3), a pilgrimage song by David, it says:
O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor mine eyes proud; I walk not in great things, nor in things too wonderful for me. For I have brought my soul to rest and stillness, as a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child my soul is within me. Israel hope in the Lord from now on and forever.

A possible explanation for this is: Do not think and act too big and too complicated, but simply with childlike trust in God. Then you feel calm and safe.

In the well-known Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd (Psalm 23:1-6) David says: The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing; He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters; He refreshes my soul. He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of deep darkness, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table for me in the sight of those who oppress me; You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Yea, salvation and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

A possible explanation for this is: Even in difficulties you can turn to God if you dare to be dependent.

In Psalm 36 (Psalm 36:6-10) David speaks about the goodness of God: O Lord, your lovingkindness is high in the heavens, your faithfulness reaches to the clouds; Your righteousness is as the mountains of God, Your judgment is a mighty flood of waters . You save people and animals, O Lord. How precious is your lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men take refuge in the shadow of your wings; They feed on the fat of Your house, You water them with the stream of Your delights. For with You is the source of life, in Your light we see light.

A possible explanation for this is: God’s goodness reaches to the clouds. If you are busy with this, then life is light. Then there is no doubt, but confidence.
