Piet Paulusma on Ameland

Piet Paulusma, the famous weatherman for SBS6, Omroep Max and Omrop Fryslân, appears on location throughout the country to give his weather talk. You can submit an application via his website. Paulusma regularly comes to Ameland to talk about the Wadden weather from the Wadden Island. Sometimes he is specially invited and sometimes he is there on holiday; the backbiting must continue. Without fail, the man from Harlingen shouts ‘Oant Moarn’ from the beach of Ameland.

O ant Moarn

Piet Paulusma has become a famous weatherman on Dutch television. We know him from Omrop Fryslân, Radio Noord and in recent years especially from SBS6’s Hart van Nederland. On Omrop Fryslân he gives his feedback in Frisian. Through Dutch television he brought Frisian into every household with the concept
‘Oant Moarn’ (see you tomorrow). Paulusma is one of the most beloved weathermen in the Netherlands: he was chosen as the most popular weatherman in the country in 1999, 2000 and 2006.

Events

Almost all events are eager to host Paulusma for the weather talk. They talk wholeheartedly about the Frisian Tot Morgen, because a weather talk on location is good for high viewing figures and that is good for the promotion and the number of visitors to the event. In the summer, Paulusma receives hundreds of invitations a day to present the weather forecast.
More than a million people watched his weather report on SBS6 every day.

Ameland

Former director of VVV Ameland Pieter Smit brought Paulusma to the island. The two know each other from the past, from before the various weather talks that the Frisian weatherman gave on the island. Paulusma was there with camera and soundman at the Rôggefeest and he was there during the Amelander Art Month. He stood at the Boomhiemke recreation park, the beach of Nes, in the Lange Duinen Noord, on the Wadden Sea, sat on a terrace and talked about the weather from the Duinoord campsite. He looks for nice locations in the open air and the audience will come automatically.
Skate, Surf and Music festival MadNes also welcomed Piet Paulusma. With the surfboard under the arm and the festival tent on the beach in the background, the ,Oant Moarn!,

Island weather

Smit complained several times in articles submitted to the Leeuwarder Courant about the poor weather forecast for the islands. National weathermen invariably say that the temperature in the Wadden area is a few degrees lower than in the rest of the country, as if the weather is always worse, and the tourist information director was keen to clarify this. Piet Paulusma understood what Smit meant and contacted him to say that the PeePee weather forecast does not automatically end with: “A few degrees lower in the Wadden area.”

Wadden weather

The weather is often better on the islands than on the mainland. Often, not always. In early summer, most showers remain on the mainland. If there is a shower above the islands, it will drift further at low tide. That has to do with the temperature of the water. In the autumn the showers linger over the islands, then the beautiful island weather is not an issue.
Since the discussion about the Wadden weather, the SBS6 weatherman explicitly mentions the Wadden area in his forecast. He lives in Harlingen and the weather there is almost identical to that of the Wadden Islands. The southwest and west coast of the Netherlands have other influences.
The special thing about the Wadden weather is also in the skies. The sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking, especially when viewed from the beach, but it is also a feast for the eyes when the flaming sky is above the villages. The island skies are a phenomenon in themselves.

Piet’s Weather Report

Piet Paulusma (1956) from Herbayum near Franeker, lives on the mudflats. He loves all the islands, but he visits Ameland and Vlieland the most. He comes there for lectures and weather talks or for a holiday.
He is one of a set of twins. Paulusma started his career at the PTT and ended up in a management position through personnel work. He took a course on meteorology and studied natural phenomena; Piet Paulusma always looks at the sky .
His weatherman career started at the Frisian broadcaster and Radio Noord. He has been in front of the SBS6 camera since September 2006 and since then Piets Weerbericht has been a hit. He also writes the weather forecast for the Harlinger Courant.

Elfstedentocht

Paulusma is an advisor of the Elfstedentocht. He finds winters more difficult to predict than spring, summer and autumn, because statistics show more erratic developments at that time of year.
The advisor of the unique skating tour cannot say whether there will be an Elfstedentocht soon. He couldn’t help but smile at the media frenzy surrounding the event. If one skate is put on a ditch, an Elfstedentocht is already being written about.

Omrop Friesland

On December 1, 2020, Omrop Fryslân will celebrate that Piet Paulusma has been a weatherman at the Frisian broadcaster for 35 years. Paulusma is nationally known as a weatherman for SBS and Omroep MAX. He had to say goodbye at the end of 2019, after 23 years of employment. He just didn’t complete his 25 years at SBS. Paulusma then became a weatherman at Omroep MAX. He was a weatherman at Omrop Fryslân for the longest time. He took office there on December 1, 1985. Piet Paulusma died on March 20, 2022.
