For many people who love fashion, the sale is the annual highlight. In fact, there are two highlights, namely the summer sale and the winter sale. By buying clothes and shoes on sale you save a lot of money because of the significant discounts that are given. You obviously don’t want to miss these deals, but how long does the sale last and when does it end?
What is the sale?
During the sale, items from a store are offered at a significant discount. Typically, the period when items are sold at a discount is called clearance. Other names are sale, clearance, seasonal clearance or outlet. In Belgium, the terms sales or bargains are most common. The reason why there is a sale is because stores want to use up their stock towards the end of the season (often in the middle of the season!) because the new collection for the next season will arrive. Explained differently: the winter collection will arrive towards the end of the summer season, which means that retailers would like to sell all summer items before the winter items hit the shelves. There are several reasons why they want to sell the items. The first is that storing residual inventory is very expensive. In addition, items cannot simply be kept until the following year because there will be a new collection the following year. After all, fashion could be completely different next year.
Why are discounts given?
When a new collection has just been released, people want to buy those products. The buyers are prepared to pay the full requested amount. However, people may not be willing to pay full price for items once the season has been going on for a while. For example, people do not buy a jacket that can only be worn for a few weeks. Because the items can no longer be sold at full price towards the end of the season, stores are forced to give significant discounts. The maximum profit on those products may not be achieved, but it is better to earn something than nothing. By going big with the terms sale, many people will come to the store. Often not all products are on sale, so there is a chance that they will also buy products that are not on sale.
When does the sale start in the Netherlands?
It is not possible to say exactly when the sale will start in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands it is allowed to have sales all year round. Roughly speaking, the sales take place when the seasons have been going on for some time. For example, you wear your winter coat from October to March. Most people will therefore buy the winter coat in the months of August, September, October or at most November. Usually not anymore after that, because then the season is already half way and it is slowly approaching the end. As a result, winter items are sold at a discount from around the beginning of December. The summer sales start around the end of July/beginning of August. When does the sale end in the Netherlands?
For those who really want to shop cheaply, it is advisable to wait as long as possible during the sale. The longer you wait, the more discount is given. The retailers want to get rid of the products and are giving increasingly higher discounts. The disadvantage, of course, is that more and more items are sold out. In practice, mainly the less common sizes will remain. Someone with average sizes should therefore not wait too long. In fact, the sale per store ends when the products from the old collection have run out, so this moment can never be pinpointed exactly. But to give you an indication, the winter sales are coming to an end at the end of January. The summer sale during September.
Start and end of sales in Belgium
In Belgium there are fixed dates for sales or bargains. The summer sales last from July 1 to 31 and the winter sales from January 3 to 31.
