Write a job application letter

If you plan to apply for a certain position, you will have to “sell” yourself in a letter to even be invited. Competitors will also meet the job requirements, but you do want to be invited. How do you present yourself.

General

Let the starting point be that you ensure that you are honest. If you’re not, sooner or later it will break you. But you can present it in a certain way. The method, originating from marketing, AIDA is a method that you can apply. The basic principle is that you stand out, in a positive sense, among all the candidates.

Seek attention

You draw attention to yourself in a positive way through the way you write. Don’t make it a standard story, structure your letter logically, but surprise the reader with your writing style. For example, use a different choice of words than the usual one. In flawless Dutch, of course.

Arouse interest

Now that the attention is there, it is time to live up to the expectations you have raised. You can do this by naming your unique points of sale. This arouses the client’s interest. Do not use a general term, but explain briefly and concisely why people should invite you out.

Arouse desire

When you apply for a job, creating desire obviously means wanting to come for an interview. Make it clear what you have to offer the company and make sure that people see you as if they would be doing themselves a disservice if they did not invite you.

Incitement to action

Last but not least should be your finishing touches. The closing sentence or paragraph should be such that they immediately put you on the pile as to be invited. Avoid the standard closing sentence of an application letter, but close neatly in a surprising sentence. This is guaranteed to stick with the person who makes this selection.

Finally

Also include some tricks in your letter. Tricks such as a positive comment (may be critical) that you make about the website. This indicates that you are interested in the company and have already viewed the website. If you know someone at the company, please briefly mention this, for example by reporting that you have heard positive things about the company (work, social aspects, etc.). Make a comment in your motivation that you are going for this employer compared to your direct competitors and why this is the case. Indicates interest in the business.

There are many ways to get invited, but don’t overdo it. Otherwise you will lose your credibility.

Good luck with your application!
