Bible – Psalm 5 in young language

Psalm 5 is a song or poem to start the day. David is the writer. He also probably wrote this Psalm one morning during his ‘quiet time’ with God. He hasn’t slept all night and starts the day by asking God for help. It is more a kind of protest out of powerlessness. David was not a sweetheart at certain times of his life. But in Psalm 5 he experiences an urge for freedom and justice. He probably also finds the many injustices done to him a bit unjustified. But he realizes that there is only salvation with God.

Protest for the King and God

David has a request for help. Maybe he’s been thinking about it all night. Not being able to sleep because of the worries that cause him so many sleepless nights. He sees God as King (verse 3). At that time, a king had all authority over the people. If the king ordered something, it was done. In our time we would go to Queen Beatrix. Imagine, she already sees you coming. You probably won’t even get past security! It is still the case that when something is very important, it is done in the name of the queen. Protests and demonstrations are often held in front of the government building in The Hague. Firstly because it is where our government is based, but also as a symbol that we address ourselves to the highest power of our country. This is exactly what David does. He, himself a king, is subservient and humble towards God, King over King David.

Well begun is half done

We already saw that Psalm 5 is a song or poem written in the morning. The writer started his day by taking quiet time with God. He sought silence to consult with the Highest authority of this world. God is King of this world and the earth is his footstool. The writer silently looks for a place to kneel before the throne of his King and God. He knows it is the only place to start his protest action. If you start the day like this, you have already come a long way.

Justice and fear

The writer seems to be afraid of his enemies. It’s as if he knows he’s going to lose or be seduced by devious schemes. The writer lives in the midst of an environment of temptations. Even today there are dozens of temptations around you that can turn you away from God. Temptations such as addictive substances, films, internet, sex, money, etc. In fact, sometimes it is not fair that it happens to you. God, the King, is the right place from which you can expect help.

Promise

The writer knows that there is peace with God. He is talking about the house of God, a holy temple. Holy means set apart. God has a separate kingdom, a different kingdom than we see around us. Perhaps it is true that you only start to see the difference when you have become tired in this world and long for freedom and peace. The writer has also come to see the difference as a result of his struggle against temptation. He wants a different life. The Psalm ends with a promise. (verses 12-13)

Psalm 5 in young language

A song by David for the conductor, which must be played on the guitar.
Listen to my words Lord, pay attention to my anger. Listen to my questions, my king and my God, to You I come. In the morning You hear my complaints, but I take quiet time with You.
You are a God who does not is happy with all misery, crime is not welcome with You. People without conscience will not make it when they are face to face with You. You hate those who are not honest, liars will lose out to you. You hate those who cheat and murder.
Help me with your righteousness to overcome those who would deceive or violate me. Show me the right way. Lies come out of their mouth, mischief has a place in their hearts, their throat is like an open grave and they have two personalities.
Punish them God, let them be taken captive by their own temptations. Push them away because of their misdeeds, for they are against You. There is joy in all who take shelter in You. The celebration will never end because You protect them. Those who have come to know Your love will rejoice!
You bless the honest, Lord. Your grace is like a shield that protects them.
