mothers Day

In honor of motherhood, Mother’s Day is celebrated in the Netherlands on the second Sunday in May. On the Sunday that this is celebrated, the mother is pampered all day, often starting with breakfast in bed, followed by gifts from the children. In some families, the mother does not have to do any housework that day. This is then taken over by the children and husband. Families often also visit their parents (or grandparents for the children) on that day to visit their mother (or grandmother). Mother’s Day is

also celebrated in other countries , but not always on the same date. For example, in the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter.

History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day comes from an old tradition where the mother was honored. This can be traced back to the mother cult among the Ancient Greeks. There is also a formal mother cult in Asia Minor, with ceremonies for Rhea or Cybele, who was called the Great Mother of the gods.

The Christian faith also reflects the veneration of the mother, namely that of Mary, the mother of Jesus. This was also celebrated in the Catholic faith.

Mother’s Day as we know it today originated in the United States. However, it was not until the nineteenth century that Mother’s Day was introduced there. This started with a campaign by Julia Ward Howe in 1870. She was a judge and thought that day should be about disarmament and pacifism by women. The real promotion followed with Anna Marie Jarvis (1907), in which appreciation for mothers was expressed. The establishment of the Mother’s Day Work Clubs provided food and medication to mothers who needed this help. Mother’s Day became official with the help of Woodrow Wilson, president in 1914. He made it a national holiday.

This Mother’s Day came to the Netherlands around 1925.

Mother’s Day gift

It is not difficult for young children to think about what they give to their mother. This often concerns a craft that was made at school or daycare. However, for older children this is often a more difficult problem. You want to give something nice and valuable that expresses your gratitude. Not every mother likes the same thing. So here are some ideas and tips for a nice Mother’s Day gift.

Pampering package

Nowadays they are all the rage: spa packages and massages. Search around the internet for a nice spa in your area, or look at an auction site, where such packages are now regularly offered. It doesn’t even have to be very expensive, but offers a very nice day out for your mother (possibly with your father, or with you).

Day out

Just like with the pampering day, you can also treat your mother to a day trip to another place. For example, let your mother choose a day at an amusement park, a zoo, or who knows what, so you can go there with the whole family. If it becomes too expensive, you may be able to ask brothers and/or sisters to help pay.

Treats/sweets

What woman doesn’t like chocolates or cookies? Maybe your mother has a special brand that she loves. Check online (or in store) to see if they have a gift package for this, or put it together yourself.

Accessory for the home

Accessories for the home, such as a beautiful candle or something else that your mother was already looking for or was missing in the house, is always a nice addition. A candle is often very nice to give. It is something romantic and you can vary the color, scent and possibly also add a bowl. At Xenos you can often find a lot of candles for a small price, so you can also make a tray of different candles, with different shapes, lengths, colors and scents.

Perfume

It is sometimes a bit more difficult to choose, because you don’t know your mother’s taste, but a nice scent is of course one of the frequently chosen gifts. Maybe you know what your mother likes, or you just buy the same scent she always has. A wrapped gift is always more fun than when she has to buy it herself.

Book

Maybe your mother really likes to read. What’s more fun than giving a good book, perhaps from her favorite author or from her favorite genre?

Plant or flowers

Perhaps not very original, but often the symbol is enough. And which mother can’t enjoy a beautiful bouquet of colorful flowers? Also buy a more expensive forest so that it is a good eye-catcher in the living room. You can also go for something that is a bit more permanent. Then go for a beautiful plant for the living room or outside. It is spring after all!

Surprise package

If you already have some ideas, or your mother has a special hobby, it is fun to put together a package with a number of products of your choice. For example, is your mother crazy about knitting? Buy some balls of wool, a set of knitting needles, and a nice basket to put it in. Or does she really like baking? Then put together a package with all kinds of products to bake cookies or a cake and add some decorations. Another idea is to buy a variety of food items that your mother loves and place them together in a nice basket or box.

Gift voucher

Are you still unable to figure it out or are you afraid that it is not enough for your mother? Then a gift voucher is always an option. It may not be the most original idea, but it will at least ensure that your mother buys something she really wants.
