NL Awards for regional broadcasters from RPO

Regional broadcasters can compete for the NL Award. The NL Award election is organized by ROOS, the Regional Broadcasting Consultation and Cooperation Foundation, an initiative of editors-in-chief of the regional broadcasters. Every year, different program makers from the regional broadcasters can win a prize in different categories. There is a cross-category award, the Golden NL Award, a prestigious award that every participating broadcaster competes for. The NL Awards are presented annually at the NL Media Event.

NL Awards

ROOS has been presenting the prizes for the best TV and radio productions annually since 2002. The competitors for the prizes are the Dutch regional broadcasters. The winners are praised for their strong journalism. The Golden NL Award has been awarded since 2004.
There are prizes available for different categories:

  • News;

  • Events;
  • Documentary;
  • Cross-media programs.

Regional Broadcasters

With the NL Awards, the Roos Foundation wants to further promote the productions of the regional broadcasters. The regional broadcasters already do this in their own region and ROOS is seeking national publicity with the prize for best regional production. ROOS organizes the competition to draw attention to high-quality productions from the various regional broadcasters. In 2012, seven regional broadcasters won an award. The overall award for best production of the year goes to the broadcaster for the province of Friesland, Omrop Fryslân.

Golden NL Award

In addition to the NL Awards, the Golden Award is handed out for various categories and transcends categories. The winner of the Golden NL Award will be honored and receive a cash prize. The winners are announced by the umbrella organization for public regional broadcasters ROOS. Previously this was on the ROOS days, the NL Media Event is the successor to the ROOS days

Omrop Friesland

In 2013, Omrop Fryslân won the Golden NL Award for the best regional broadcast of the year 2012, a report made in 2012 about the last participant in the Eleven Cities Cycling Tour. The maker of the report wins 2,500 euros.

Hey!

For the television program Hea! (Hay!) Janko Krist made a report about a participant in the Eleven Cities Tour by bicycle. It was the bottom line that was followed until the end of its journey. The report is called De lêste fytser (the last cyclist).
Wiebe Idsinga is the last cyclist and we hear great stories from him that emerge during his ride to the finish. Idsinga doesn’t want to stop and plods on until the end. The fog that comes up plays into the hands of the reporter, it produces beautiful images.

Submit for NL Award

Programs can only be submitted via the regional broadcasters, who will receive a message in October of each year informing them that they can submit their reports and what the deadline is. The broadcasters themselves decide which programs they allow to compete. The nominations are announced in February each year and the awards ceremony follows in March. The NL Awards will be presented during the ROOS days, a conference for regional broadcasters.

ROOS Foundation

ROOS was the umbrella organization that represented the interests of the public regional broadcasters in the Netherlands. ROOS did several things for the collective:

  • Develop policy;
  • maintain contact with politicians, governments and others;
  • concluding collective contracts;
  • give information;
  • promote common interests that fall outside the previous categories.

The ROOS board had a board member from each public regional broadcaster. Together they formed the foundation board.

RPO – Regional Public Broadcasting

In July 2017, the ROOS Foundation was merged into the RPO Foundation (Regional Public Broadcasting). The RPO wants to guarantee high-quality, culturally specific and independent journalism in every region.
The RPO is committed to the NL Awards and organizes the annual NL Media Event.

Special winners

RTV North 2017

RTV Noord won an NL Award three times in various categories for 2017. The project You’re welcome! won in two categories: Best Online Project and the Golden NL Award and the broadcaster won the Own News Award about working conditions at Primark. Brigit Oomes was Jury of the NL Awards. About RTV Noord’s Own News Award, she said: ‘The winner distinguished himself with the way the news was found. It was difficult to speak to the interviewees, but the news was picked up very well and beautifully developed. This proves that you can find news through all kinds of channels, including Facebook.

The Online Project was about a tour of some of the projects that were paid for with money from gas extraction. RTV Noord also received the Golden NL Award for that project, the prize for the best journalistic production in the Netherlands, made by a regional broadcaster.

Omroep Brabant 2016

Omroep Brabant won the Golden NL Award in 2016 with a production about Woenselse Poort, a psychiatric clinic. The interviews and information provide a disturbing picture of the TBS clinic in Eindhoven. The place is not safe for the people who stay there or for the people who work there. The report is particularly poignant because of the recent crimes committed by a client from a TBS clinic (the murder of Anne Faber) and by a man who should have received psychiatric help (the murder of Els Borst).
