In 2023, more and more Jews and non-Jews recognize the importance of saying blessings (brachot). They realize that G-d is the source of all life on earth. Jewish brachot (blessing sayings) at Shabbat candles, children’s benshen on Friday evening, washing hands, bread, separating challah, pre-bracha Torah, Nabracha Torah, seeking Chametz, Omert counting, Bracha yomtov candles, Shofar, Sukkah, Lulav, Hanukkah, fruits, Shehècheyanu, Megila, Arba kanfot , Tallit, Tefilin, Mezuzah, Rope, Nabracha, Brachot which you say before you eat or drink anything. These blessing sayings are all intended for Jews. But a number of proverbs related to food (see last link) should also be recited by non-Jews (Noachides). They too must realize that G-d is the Source of all life.
Bracha – blessing spell
A blessing can be interpreted in two different ways:
- a ritual blessing for consuming food, performing certain mitzvos, and on certain occasions;
- a blessing that you share with someone else for good health, etc.
Below are ritual sayings .
Baruch Atta A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-O-lam
Baruch…
Allow me to tap deeply into my tangible reality…
Atta…
You as You are now here in everything and yet not grasped by any of them, You as You are everywhere, yet beyond time and space, You, only You, indefinable, unnameable, unknowable as anything other than You, may You also be found within…
A-do-nai…
You as You radiate Your infinite light, contracting and expanding that light again and again with quantum leaps and boundaries to become the form and substance of countless worlds, evolving, transforming, condensing, until reaching the crystalline state of this physical world in which I stand , you may also be found within…
E-lo-hei-nu…
You as You are the divine energy and consciousness that breathes within me, my soul and life as they are one with You, and You are one with me, and through that, may You be discovered as…
Me-lech Ha-O-lam…
You as You are manifested in all the powers of this universe, You as You speak to us from every action of this mundane world, You as the sole author and director of this drama in every detail.
So that in every mitzvah we celebrate, in every human activity of eating, drinking, sleeping and knowing life, You will be found there, felt, known and perceived, as You, only You, the unknowable, unnameable You.
Brachot – Jewish blessings for food
The Jewish sages decreed that nothing should be borrowed from this world without first reciting a blessing. This is based on Psalm 24:1 To the Eternal belongs the earth and everything in it, the world and everything in it. God is the Source of all life. By reciting a blessing spell you become aware that it is God who sustains you with food. The blessing sayings below are all intended for Jews. But a number of proverbs related to food (see last link) should also be recited by non-Jews (Noachides). They too must realize that God is the Source of all life.
Some basic rules regarding brachot with food
- Even if only a small amount of food is consumed, for example eating a cookie, a blessing spell is required.
- It is important to know which bracha to pronounce before you start.
- If you are right-handed, the food should be held in the right hand while reciting. Left-handed people do this in their left hand.
- Don’t talk until you’ve taken the first bite after the blessing.
- Because Gd’s name appears in every blessing, the bracha is not recited unnecessarily.
- You may only say “Amen” when someone else is saying a bracha. Do not say ,Amen, when reciting a bracha yourself.
- One is not obliged to pronounce the blessing in Hebrew. If non-Jews do not know Hebrew, they can simply do it in their own language.
