If you have completed or stopped studying, you may become unemployed. A completed study does not automatically mean that you have a job. Sometimes it takes a number of weeks or months before you actually obtain a position. In the meantime, you obviously have no income and you have to apply for benefits. What should you pay attention to so that you have temporary income?

Loss of hours
If you lose a job, it is logical that you are entitled to benefits. This also applies if you are partially fired. You can also apply for benefits for lost hours. Lost hours worked means that you do not receive any wages for those hours. If you lose five hours or more per week, you can apply for benefits for those hours. However, if you have been active for less than ten hours per week and you lose more than half of those hours, you can also apply for benefits for those hours.
Did you work?
You may be eligible for benefits if you have demonstrably performed work. It means that you must have worked at least 26 of the last 36 weeks. Demonstrable work means that it is registered within the UWV system. Normal functions that involve paying premiums are included in that system. If you do not meet this minimum requirement, you have not worked sufficiently and you cannot make a claim.
Was the job full-fledged?
Substandard work for which wages have been received does not mean that unemployment insurance has been linked to it. Working for someone for a few weeks does not necessarily mean that it has been arranged in accordance with an employment contract. In principle, an internship is also uninsured. You may have received wages in accordance with an internship contract, but the internship provider may not pay any premiums. It is therefore important for you to have insight into the extent to which your employer has actually paid premiums. You can normally see this on your pay slip.
Reason for dismissal
There are four legally permitted reasons why an employment contract is terminated. These are:
- by operation of law: the contract is entered into for a specific period or is dissolved when an objective has been achieved;
- due to business economic circumstances: the company is performing poorly and has to lay off staff;
- by mutual consent: the employee has found another job and the employer agrees;
- summary dismissal for an urgent reason.
If the dismissal is not due to the employee, he or she is entitled to a benefit. This means in the event of dissolution by operation of law and for commercial reasons.
When can you apply for it?
You can apply for it once you have been fired. The basic principle is that you have no income from other sources of income for the lost hours. If you stop studying, but the student finance continues for a while, then that is also income. In principle, you can submit the application from the moment that student financing has been stopped. Always keep your termination agreement in a safe place so that you can prove that you have worked. You can arrange the application via the internet by logging into the system with your DigiD or you can go to the nearest UWV office.

Benefits are often short-lived. It gives you the opportunity to have temporary income, so that you have the opportunity to find a job. If you have worked less than four years in the last five years, you are only entitled to three months. For the loss of income you get:

Duty to apply
Because you receive income from the government, you are required to apply for the number of hours for which you receive the contribution. In other words, you have to do something every week to ensure that you can find a job. In concrete terms, this means one application letter per week.
