The idea behind the CliniClowns Foundation

The CliniClowns Foundation was founded for children with an illness or disability. This foundation was founded on the idea that sick and/or disabled children are in a dependent and vulnerable position. Children with an illness or disability are unconsciously and unintentionally treated differently than healthy children. This makes their youth look different from that of their healthy peers. The illness or disability is often in the foreground for these children. The CliniClowns Foundation believes that sick children should be able to continue playing and simply be a child again. This way, these sick children can develop better. Playing and laughing can also help you process the situation better. And according to the CliniClowns Foundation, every child has the right to this.

What does the CliniClowns Foundation do?

Hospitals and other healthcare institutions aim to make sick children better, this foundation is not concerned with that. CliniClowns provides the distraction and fun. They let the children be children again. CliniClowns, as the name suggests, uses clowns for this. These clowns act and go along with the child’s fantasy to distract the child and take him out of everyday reality. The environment often visibly benefits from this. Because a child’s illness is also very distressing for family and friends and to see that child smile again for a moment can mean a lot.

CliniClowns would prefer to visit all sick children in the Netherlands, but unfortunately that is not possible. CliniClowns tries to provide as many children as possible with distraction and entertainment. For example, the clowns not only visit hospitals, but they also place play cases in hospitals and healthcare institutions for children to play with. An attempt is made to enable children to escape reality for a while when the clowns are not present.

CliniClowns offers distraction and fun to sick and disabled children in the Netherlands. These CliniClowns are specially trained, professional clowns. The foundation offers a training course of 8 weekends, after which those who have passed can call themselves CliniClown. This training is funded by the foundation, but to be eligible you must first audition and meet certain job requirements. The approximately 70 CliniClowns play in more than 100 hospitals and other healthcare institutions throughout the Netherlands. The CliniClowns Foundation has kept up with the times and has now also developed an interactive, online CliniClowns Play Suitcase for times when children need entertainment and distraction when the clowns are not on site.

Support the CliniClowns Foundation

The CliniClowns Foundation is completely dependent on contributions from private individuals and companies for its income. At the moment, the CliniClowns Foundation can provide distraction and fun to about a third of all sick and/or disabled children, but many more children are entitled to this! It is also possible to become a volunteer at the CliniClowns Foundation and for some it is even possible to become a CliniClown. You can read how you can support CliniClowns here.
