Customs surrounding dying and death: the Sufi movement

Hazrat Inayat Khan lived in India from 1882 to 1927. He founded the Sufi movement. The Sufi movement is about the search for the essential: ‘God in us’.

Common core

The Sufi movement holds that all religions have a common core. That is why people read from the sacred scriptures of different religions in worship. The Sufi movement is about the search for the essential: ‘God in us’.

Disease

Illness is a disturbance of balance, for example a disturbance of the balance between body and mind. It is therefore obvious that in order to recover, efforts must be made to restore balance.

When trying to restore balance, you can use:

  • good breathing and therefore fresh air
  • fresh water, for example spring water
  • make time for concentration every day, for example by closing the curtains around the bed for a while every day
  • clear information about the medications and any side effects
  • for the seriously ill, help from a spiritual counselor

Dead

At death, life continues as a drop of water is absorbed into the ocean.

If you are caring for a member of the Sufi movement:

When caring for a member of the Sufi movement, just as when caring for anyone else, it is important to give:

  • your attention
  • your dedication
  • your love

If someone is dying and there is no spiritual director, you can also do something yourself. You can read from the books of Hazrat Inayat Khan. You can find these books in the library.
