Adhesive tape, a world invention!

Our lives are made a lot simpler and more pleasant by all kinds of world inventions. To give an example, how about adhesive tape? Adhesive tape, it is so obvious that you no longer think about it, but it is so handy to have at home. Who invented this genius product? Who invented adhesive tape?

To make beautiful or useful objects it is necessary to connect materials. Each material requires its own connection method. To attach wood to wood we use nails, screws or wood glue. We connect fabrics with needle and thread. Metal is soldered or welded to metal. We have come up with good ways to connect all kinds of materials.

Paper

Connecting two pieces of paper together is a completely different story. You cannot use nails or screws for this, only glue is suitable. The problem is that the two pieces of paper should often not overlap, because you will miss an important piece.

Connect paper

Take, for example, a torn page in a book. You can’t glue it by taping the two pieces of page together, because then the page will no longer fit in the book. Moreover, parts of the text would then disappear under the added paper. A solution for such a situation was found by gluing a paper strip over the two page pieces, so that they formed one whole again. This works great for pages that are blank or unprinted on one side.

Objection

One drawback of using a strip of paper to repair a torn page is that text probably got stuck under the strip. Another objection was that the whole action is quite laborious. Spread glue on a strip, and then stick everything neatly in without the glue pushing through or running out from under the strip. In both cases this results in a lot more mess than you want, and the pages may end up sticking together, which is not the intention.

The solution: adhesive tape

An employee of the American 3M, Richard Drew , came up with a solution in 1926: adhesive tape. Since then, adhesive tape has conquered the world. Nowadays there are different forms:

  • Dry tape
  • Adhesive tape

Dry tape

This type of adhesive tape comes on a roll, but does not stick itself. This tape is often made of paper and has a layer that only becomes sticky when moistened. You often see this type used on boxes. Because it is of course not transparent, it is not used in places where you still need to be able to read or view the surface.

Adhesive tape

The adhesive tape is on a roll. The material is adhesive on one side. The adhesive layer is covered by the tape being rolled up. The adhesive layer will automatically adhere to the back of the next piece. This adhesive tape is available in all types of materials and adhesive strengths. We know the heavy tape (for example duct tape), which is used to hold or repair heavier things in place. But of course we mainly know the lighter transparent tape. Adhesive tape is often used to hang up pieces of paper, to repair pages in a book, or wrapping paper to keep a present in place.

the adhesive tape holders differ?

Holder

Although adhesive tape is of course very useful, sticking it also has a disadvantage. If you used a piece, the tape can adhere to the roll. Then try again to find the beginning. You can of course always fold over a piece of tape so that the end does not stick and is easy to trace. It is best to use an adhesive tape holder, where a special cutting knife on the one hand easily cuts the adhesive tape, and on the other hand holds the end of the adhesive tape so that it can be easily removed during the next application.

Special adhesive tape

There is also double-sided tape on the market. One side of this tape sticks to the roll, the other side has a covering layer that must be peeled off when attaching. This adhesive tape is often used for all kinds of hobbies, but also for attaching floor coverings, stair coverings, etc.

Adhesive tape to secure nothing

Not all tape is intended for securing things. When painting window frames, masking tape is used to protect windows. This material is attached to the window, tightly against the frame to be painted. If you overshoot while painting, you will hit the masking tape, not the window. After painting, you can easily remove the masking tape. You often see masking tape used as a kind of sticker. Because the masking tape can be written on, you can attach small marks anywhere. my view on
