Unlearn unpleasant traits and irritating inconveniences

“Every fool has his flaws” goes the old saying. The proverb means that no one is perfect. However, a person is often not aware of all the strange, striking habits he/she has. If they are good qualities, that is of course no problem. But when it comes to annoying annoying habits and misbehavior, you should know about them so that you can correct that unkind annoying behavior.

Why we often don’t realize habits

The fact that man is a creature of habit, who prefers to change as few things as possible, is evident, for example, when people come together for the first time in a new periodic (e.g. weekly) meeting. Suppose 6 people meet for the first time and take a more or less random place at the table. Then the next time, when that meeting takes place with the same people in the same room, it turns out that most participants sit in exactly the same place as the first time. The same phenomenon occurs among people who take the same train to work every day. Very often we unconsciously board the same carriage and sit on the same seat. We also appear to see travelers around us who we saw on that seat the day before and who therefore have the same habit.

Positive habits for structure and overview

Habits often make life easy. They give our existence structure and that makes us a pleasant partner, colleague or friend because it gives us a certain predictability. It is of course easy to eat at fixed times every day and take the same route. And to go to your old mother every week on the same day, or to perform certain actions, etc.

Obnoxious habits

However, there are a large number of habits that do not benefit you, nor those around you. Sometimes the environment can even take offense to your unwanted habits. If you are lucky, they will let you know in advance in a friendly manner, so that no annoyance is created, which could cause a bomb to explode at some point. Sometimes we are of course fully aware of what we are doing wrong out of habit.

Typical bad habits

No person is perfect and that is why we are all at risk from the following pitfalls:

At home

  • Starting something, but not finishing it.
  • Using something, but not cleaning it up or putting it back.
  • Not tidying the shower after use, so that someone else finds your hair everywhere.
  • Let your administration be neglected.
  • Picking your face in front of someone else.

At work

  • Say you’ll call back but don’t.
  • If you make a mistake, blame it on someone else.
  • Grumbling too often about management, without considering your own weaknesses.

At the association

  • Just do the fun things and let others do the tedious work.
  • Gossip about others.
  • Too little work on the sense of solidarity and team spirit.

How do you unlearn bad habits?

First of all, there must of course be the will and motivation to change yourself. And we must distinguish between conscious and unconscious behavior. Because if in the choir you always unconsciously frown at the audience during a performance because you are a little tense, you can only look cheerful if you pay close attention to this point every time before a performance. And even then it takes a long time to unlearn such an ingrained unconscious habit. With smoking, on the other hand, you can quit overnight if you really want to. If you have the habit of not doing enough healthy exercise, it will not be easy mentally to go outside when the weather is not nice to go running, cycling or something like that. Then such things only work if you do them as a team, or if there is a competition element involved. With the support of others, you can always get rid of bad habits more easily and quickly. That is why it helps that your partner constantly draws your attention to certain behavior, provided you have agreed to this with her/him. Because unsolicited criticism doesn’t work either.
