Communication: magic word “trust”

Since the crisis, we have collectively been throwing the word “trust” into our mouths. Provided that true trust is beautiful, we just don’t always act on it. What makes us think and expect that just speaking these words has an impact, contempt for people, just plain stupid? Who knows…

What does the word mean?

The dictionary says this about it, among other things: for honest, count on, rely on, build, believe, hope, rely on, rely on.
But we link different things to these words and that is confusing, even though we are trying to convey the same thing. A society that is not based on distrust and resentment, but on trusting each other.

Saying and doing

If a government is having a hard time due to a crisis (in whatever area), society is unable to provide the interpretation that reflects the ideal picture and people allow themselves to be influenced, then a word like trust is something that many people opt for. Rightly so, because most people are reliable and would do justice to this group. This does not alter the fact that its inhabitants (and not only in the Netherlands) are evolutionarily in different zones and that means that not everyone is receptive to it. This is no different for a company. The majority of the employees are reliable, but there are always people who are not honest and/or have something to compensate and their ego overtakes them. Then collecting money is an option even if it is less fair. Or the compensatory behavior translates into wanting to be the boss and exercising power. Possibly not realizing that real power is a natural process and cannot be forced. It says everything about the person in question.

All of this translates to people rebelling because things aren’t fair. Think of work and wages that are not in proportion, a greedy culture or power for power’s sake.

Giving meaning to words

Knowing this, we actually have to give substance to our words and if the government expresses that they want to assume confidence, you have to expand all kinds of inspection bodies. It may be necessary given the developments, but saying and doing are no longer consistent and that will become noticeable at some point.

Because, for example, the banker who relies on trust and wants to help people grow from that perspective and wants to be a pleasant employer, is not consistent if he excludes the experienced man or woman in an application procedure for the position of an experienced leader. The young man or woman with only a piece of paper that fits is preferred. Not that the piece of paper provides the guarantee, but offers the distrustful employer a little more guidance, regardless of the costs. It is logical that using the word trust is not really taken seriously (anymore).

The world is changing

The world is changing in more areas and the trendsetters also feel that we need to take a different path. We translate this into fashion products, fashion colors and also into buzzwords. Words that are fine if they are subsequently interpreted, but unfortunately that is often not the case. The decline of a term that is actually used incorrectly will then quickly begin.

The changing world continues and people look for their own way for a while, but it detracts from the supporters of the figurehead (who wrongly throws around certain terms). The only question then is whether you should use these terms.

The importance of good communication

The men and women who write the texts for the figureheads may be able to create a nice catchy story and include good one-liners and appealing terms, but this is not always consistent with practice. The use of the word trust is a good example of this.
This calls for communication people to be more involved in practice. However, it may also be that the text was created at the request of the figurehead and this man/woman is not able to make his/her intentions known to his/her own supporters. In that case it says something about the leader.

Finally

Yet trust in itself would be nice, people who can be trusted. That would prevent a lot of crime. But apparently we’re not ready for that yet, unfortunately.
In any case, communication has the most impact if it is followed up in action. This prevents us from talking about empty language and so new terms arise automatically.
