Taqiyya, what is that?

Taqiyya is an increasingly well-known concept in the Netherlands. But what about taqiyya? Is that a license to lie to non-Muslims? And why is it that taqiyya has been virtually unknown among the Muslim community until it was talked about and written about? I will try to explain a few things regarding this concept. Taqiyya can be practiced by Muslims in a hostile environment when they are in great danger if it is revealed that they adhere to the Islamic Religion. Fortunately, such a situation rarely occurs, unless an all-out war breaks out, hunting down those with an Islamic background, then there is a real chance of taqiyya being applied. But the main movements in Islam even reject taqiyya, because it can lead to hypocrisy.

Quran

Quran 16:106 tells of a single case where taqiyya was applied by a Muslim. The verse reads:
, Whoever rejects God after having believed – except he who is compelled while his heart continues to find peace in faith – and opens his heart to unbelief, upon him is the wrath of God; and there will be a great punishment for it him his

In the first instance, God’s wrath is upon the one who rejects his faith after having believed, except he who is forced, as the verse makes clear.

Reason for revelation

This is in response to Ammar ibn Yassir who was arrested and prosecuted in Mecca because of his beliefs. He had to abandon his faith and acknowledge their idolatry, he refused, so he was subjected to excessive torture, with the aim of killing him, after which he yielded to the wishes of his executioner. But because the aversion did not come from the bottom of his heart, thus giving up the appearance that he is now a disbeliever, but deeply convinced as he is, he was pardoned through the above Quranic verses. It is also narrated that Ammar complained about this to Mohamed, the Prophet asked Ammar: What do you feel in your heart following this event? Ammar replied: I am at peace with my faith. Whereupon the Prophet said: If you are threatened with violence again, do the same again. So much for taqiyya in practice.

Taqiyya in Islam

Furthermore, little attention is paid to taqiyya in Islam, except that the Koran commentary comments verse 3:28 as: In the event of a threat of violence, a believer can choose an unbeliever as a friend if he can thereby prevent violence against himself. This verse has nothing to do with another quotation from the Qur’an, namely: 60:8:

,Allah does not forbid you to benefit from those who have not fought against you for religion, nor expelled you from your homes. to do and deal justly; surely God loves the righteous. ,

Of course, friendship is forbidden with those who fought against the Muslims, see verse 60:9. Please note: This does not mean that, according to the Quran, peace can never be made again, verse 60:7:

,It is possible that God will establish love between you and those with whom you are at enmity.,
These last two verses have therefore not concerned with taqiyya, but dealing with manners in daily traffic.

Religious freedom

Although taqiyya is rarely mentioned in the Quran and in the Sunnah (Traditions and sayings of the Prophet), taqiyya is a kind of self-protection against the threat of persecution and violence, as is evident from the quotes that do deal with it. It is often claimed that Muslims in Western Europe use taqiyya to conceal their true nature! that’s a bizarre statement! Firstly, as mentioned, the taqiyya is not intended to conceal anything, secondly: Anyone who says such a thing declares that he would like to persecute and torture Muslims because of their Religion! He may also not know what taqiyya means. As far as we know, we have freedom of religion here in the West, no one has to fear persecution just because he is a believer. In the absence of religious freedom, taqiyya could offer a solution. This explains why a large part of the Muslim community was unfamiliar with taqiyya, as there is no need for it, no one is threatened with violence and death if he does not turn his back on his faith. The average Muslim will look at you quizzically and bewildered if you start talking to him about taqiyya.
