A fun way to make your children’s party extra special is to attach a theme to it. In addition to real boy and girl themes such as pirates and princesses, you can also opt for a fairytale party. At a theme party, the idea is that everything you do fits the theme. You can implement the fairy tale theme in all kinds of facets of the birthday party, namely:

Work description
Make a card from cardboard. You can choose whether it will be a square or rectangular card.
Stick a nice picture on the front and write Fairytale Party. Write the text on the inside. A nice idea for a text on the card is, for example:
A long time ago a girl/boy was born called…. The fairy wanted a real fairytale party for his/her fourth/fifth (e.g.) birthday and you can be there!
You must also mention the date, place and time of the party . Also let us know whether children are brought home (with a full belly?).
Everyone is already dressed up as a fairytale character
On the invitation you can mention that every child can come dressed as a fairytale character. A fairytale character is a fairly broad dress code, which a child often has at home. For example, think of a princess, gnome, knight, dragon, king, queen, mermaid, goat, wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, etc. The possibilities are endless. This is in contrast to a children’s party where you are limited to, for example, pirates or princesses.
You can possibly rent a dress-up box so that everyone has an outfit. A dress code is of course not necessary, but children often enjoy dressing up!
Fairytale party: treats
You can also make treats in a fairy tale theme. This makes the entire theme implemented down to the last detail. The following treats are suitable for use with a fairy tale theme:
Mushroom cakes
Bake cakes or muffins and decorate them with red icing or red marzipan. Then make rounds with white chocolate (e.g. from Baukje) or white marzipan dots. There are also ready-made suits available for this.
Candy house
Make a candy house from gingerbread for the witch from the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. Cut the slices and glue them together with icing (icing sugar and water). Tip: also use long skewers to connect the pieces together. Decorate the house with icing and different candies, such as bacon, smarties, m&ms, licorice laces, etc.
Cake
Nowadays you can buy or make your own beautifully decorated cakes in any theme you want. A princess castle, a dragon cake, a mermaid, you can’t think of anything so crazy. A cheaper variant is a cream cake with a photo or picture in a fairy tale theme on it.
Glazed or chocolate apple
Snow White’s poisonous apple is a tasty and quite healthy treat. Thread an apple onto a stick and dip it in liquid chocolate or icing. Let the apples dry upright!
What games do you play at a fairytale party?
A children’s party at home naturally includes games. These games are suitable for a children’s party with a fairy tale theme:
Poisoned apple bites (Snow White)
There is an apple in a container of water. The children try to remove this apple from the water with their mouths. You can choose a winner from this, but when you play this game with toddlers, playing the game is exciting enough.
Pooping nails (Fakir has a bed of nails)
Take as many pots, nails and string as there are children. Each child is given a string with a nail tied around his waist. The nail hangs from the back. Each child stands with a pot behind him. Now the idea is for the children to put the nail in the pot. The children bend to their knees to lower the nail and are not allowed to use their hands. The one who gets the nail in the pot first wins. But here too, playing the game is fun enough for toddlers!
Pass the magic wand
This is a variation on the well-known game of musical chairs. The children stand in a circle. There is a magic wand (homemade or purchased) and it is passed around while music is playing. The person holding the staff when the music stops is out and stands outside the circle. You continue like this until there is one child left.
Cookies or bacon bites (Hansel and Gretel’s candy house)
Attach gingerbread or bacon to a string. Hold the ends with two adults and let the children eat it off the line.
Make a T-shirt
Buy basic white t-shirts at HEMA and iron on a fairytale-themed picture. Also iron each child’s name on a t-shirt. Let the children finish their own t-shirt with fabric paint. You can bet they are proud of that!
End in a fairytale way
You can take all the children home by car, but an extra fun way to bring the children home in the winter months is in a lantern parade. When all the children live in the neighborhood and it is dusk or dark at the end of the afternoon, a lantern tour is exciting and special.
