Guarantee for a visit to a loved one from abroad

If your foreign loved one is temporarily visiting the Netherlands, but he/she has no income to live on, sufficient financial resources must be available. The visitor must have the opportunity to spend a certain amount of money in the country, which you as the receiving party must guarantee. What does a guarantee entail and what must be met?

Guarantee

  • Rules apply both ways
  • Being able to make payments
  • Form and what else regarding guarantee?
  • The duration of the visa

Rules apply both ways

Strictly speaking, within Europe there is free transport of people, goods and payment transactions without any further requirements. This means that we can also go on holiday to another European country. But that’s different when we go on holiday abroad. We usually have to apply for a visa if the stay lasts longer than one month. The other way around is also the case. If a foreigner from outside Europe comes to our country, additional requirements apply regarding obtaining a visa for the Netherlands. The guest must first go to the Dutch Embassy or Consulate in the country of departure to obtain the correct stamp. But what if that person has insufficient income for maintenance, what are the additional requirements?

Being able to make payments

If your loved one from abroad wants to visit you, but he/she has insufficient financial resources, proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation must be provided. The basic principle is that, strictly speaking, your guest can spend at least 34 euros per day. If he/she cannot carry it himself, you must act as guarantor. This means that you must earn at least 1,453 euros gross per month as a wage requirement. The more you earn, the better it is. You meet the minimum requirement if you earn more than that limit. It means that you, as a guest receiving party, are considered responsible for the maintenance and stay of the guest until the moment he or she returns home. What do you need to arrange the guarantee so that your guest can apply for the visa at the Embassy or Consulate?

Form and what else regarding guarantee?

You must complete the form to provide proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation. To this end, you must have sufficient income and the employment contract must be in force for at least one year (from the moment of visa application). A copy of this and the last three pay slips with the passport must be provided in addition to the signed form. Please note that the form must be legalized at the municipality where you are registered. Based on these documents, the correct paperwork can be arranged abroad so that a visa application is positively assessed. If you are not employed, but have your own company, you can also receive guests through the guarantee. To this end, the form must be submitted in combination with information from the Chamber of Commerce, the latest tax assessment and profit and loss account to strengthen the visa.

The duration of the visa

By default, a visa application is valid for a maximum of three months. However, a guarantee can be declared valid for one year and therefore a long-term visa can also be obtained. This will usually apply after a second guarantee. The guest will often have to report to customs or immigration again within three months or make a long trip abroad, or return to the country of origin.
