The history of Turkey

Turkey is a bridge between Europe and Asia. In the western half you will find the cities of Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya. Half of them are also richer and more densely populated. The other part starts from Ankara to the East. Most visitors come to the western part because it has the most beautiful coastline in the Mediterranean. Eastern Turkey is more for the adventurer than for the beach lover.

Both the East and the West of Turkey have an abundance of wealth due to archaeological finds. The sites date back to the Stone Age and the Hittites. There are natural wonders everywhere in Turkey such as caves, waterfalls, gorges, volcanoes and lakes.

Did you know that there is a frozen waterfall in Turkey?

Called the Pamukkale. Well, he’s not really frozen. Due to the presence of lime in the water, the waterfall is whiter in color. So it looks like it’s frozen. The waterfall is 35°C, so it can’t be frozen!

In the past, Turkey was called differently than it is now, namely A Natolia. This name is derived from Greek. In Roman times the area was called Asia Minor (i.e. small – Asia).

During the First World War, Turkey (the Ottoman Empire) fought on the side of Germany and Austria. The war led to the rise of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s national liberation movement.

Alexander the Great began a new era in the history of Turkey. Alexander became known because he wanted to liberate Greek cities and conquer the Persian empire.

The religion of Turkey

In Turkey we find different religions. Namely Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

Problems in Turkey

There are many social problems in Turkey, such as domestic violence, abuse of women, problems with women’s rights and discrimination against women. There are also many problems with women being used as prostitutes. In this article I will limit myself to domestic violence.

Domestic violence

Domestic violence against women and younger girls occurs at all ages and all walks of life. They are verbally and psychologically abused, and both physical and sexual violence is used. Sometimes it can lead to death.
But a small percentage of women file a complaint out of fear for their abused partner. There are also too few shelters for abused women where they can possibly go.

What about women’s rights in Turkey?

The European Parliament believes that women’s rights in Turkey should be monitored annually. According to the parliamentary recommendation, the Turkish government should build more and better refuges for women who are victims of violence.
There are currently only 14 shelters in the country and this is far too few.
Parliament asks the EU to create and finance social research projects. Parliament is also pushing for higher women’s participation in politics.

Does Turkey have women’s organizations?

There is also domestic violence in Belgium, but they can still learn a lot from women’s organizations in Turkey. Turkey already has more experience with these problems and is therefore prepared to tackle the problems better.

What are the punishments for the husband if he is guilty of abusing his wife?

The first time the police come to the door, the police officer gives a warning. The second time it is more serious and he has to give half of his salary to the woman. (this way she has more power in the family situation and she is no longer totally dependent on the man) On a third occasion, he is obliged to hand over his entire salary to his wife.
In Diyarbakir, a city in the South-East of Turkey, the municipal council, the women’s organization and the trade union have devised and introduced this new procedure against domestic violence.

But cooperation between the government and private organizations does not work so well in all parts of Turkey. This is a shame, because there are a lot of initiatives regarding domestic violence and honor killings that they could put into practice.

The organization ‘Tiye International’

Tiye international is an umbrella organization of black migrants and female refugees. Here women can tell their story and know that they are not alone. Abused women can talk about it with each other and help them process it. Domestic violence mainly occurs among low population groups, especially in Eastern Turkey. my view on
