Marianne Vaatstra – Jasper’s confession after DNA research

Jasper S., the man who murdered Marianne Vaatstra in 1999, confessed to his lawyer ten minutes after his arrest. A full confession followed weeks later. His victim met him in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jasper S. is a farmer in Oudwoude, a village near the crime scene. S. came into the picture as the perpetrator after a DNA kinship test, in which he himself participated.

Confession of Jasper S. – murderer of Marianne Vaatstra

Jasper S., the farmer from Oudwoude and suspect in the murder case of Marianne Vaatstra, confessed on the day of his arrest. After only ten minutes he told his then lawyer Jan Vlug that he had committed the act. ,Wow, that you still want to assist me. I did it,, S. said to Vlug. the lawyer was deeply impressed by the quick confession: ,Then the blood will clot in your veins for a while., That same day, Vlug says to the camera: “The murder has been solved.” After that first confession, S. remained silent for weeks.

  1. eventually made a full confession. He met Marianne Vaastra on May 1, 1999, the night after Queen’s Day. He didn’t know the sixteen-year-old girl. She had gone to a disco in Kollum and cycled home to Zwaagwesteinde. S. took a detour. They met by chance at Veenklooster.

Pro forma meeting

  1. will be in court on February 27, 2013. The hearing is in the court in Leeuwarden. This pro forma hearing will determine how the case should proceed. A special feature is that the message about the hearing came out through a tweet from Marianne’s brother, Freddy Vaatstra.

Session spring 2013

The substantive hearing will take place in the spring of 2013.

Thirteen years after the act after DNA research

For thirteen years the killer remained silent. S. lived near the Vaatstra family. The families hardly know each other, if at all.
S. emerged as the undisputed perpetrator due to a large-scale DNA investigation. S.’s DNA was found on the girl’s body. S. had been in jail since November 18, 2012, in pre-trial detention. During his confession, S. stated that he had not known Marianne. He met her by chance, after which he took her into the meadow, threatening her with a knife. He raped the girl, killed her and left her body in the pasture near her home. Hair, blood and semen were found on Marianne and her clothing. One of the murder weapons was the girl’s bra. She was strangled with it.
The body was quickly found. S.’s arrest took 13 years.

Wrong time, wrong place

The scenario that the girl was in the wrong place at the wrong time is consistent with the idea that Marinanne’s sister, Ineke, has had about the circumstances all these years.

Heartbreaking

The farmer participated in the DNA test to avoid being caught. The game was over. He remained silent for 13 years to protect his own family. S.’s family continues to support him. They are heartbreakingly sad about what S. has done and what has happened to them.

Why

  1. can’t figure out why he did it. That night after Queen’s Day he drove away from home. The farmer was living in a stressful situation at that time: there were concerns about the farm and income. He took a detour to sort things out.

The knife

At that time, the knife he had in his pocket was nothing more than a tool that every farmer carries with him. It became a murder weapon. He met Marianne completely by chance.

  1. was brought to trial in 2013 and received his sentence.
