Leeuwarder Courant – Daily newspaper of the province of Friesland

Leeuwarder Courant has been the largest newspaper in Friesland since 1752 and still operates under the same name. The newspaper is called LC for short. Most of the newspaper is in Dutch, but Frisian is also written in the LC. The newspaper collaborates with Dagblad van het Noorden, Friesch Dagblad and various regional weekly newspapers and magazines. De Leeuwarder publishes its news digitally on a website and an app and sells plus articles behind a paywall. Individual items can be purchased via the Blendle online kiosk.

Foreign news

The LC is a provincial newspaper with a view of the province, the interior and foreign news. Initially, the Leeuwarder Courant only reported foreign news. At the time, the newspaper was aimed at merchants who were looking forward to that news. Domestic news came later and it was not until 1850 that provincial news was covered in the newspaper. After the war, the LC grew into a provincial quality newspaper in broadsheet format.

Daily tabloid

On September 29, 2012, the LC will be published for the first time in tabloid format. With the switch to this format, the layout of the newspaper also changes. A new supplement entitled Smaak & Stijl will appear on Saturday about fashion, travel, computer games, food and drinks. In terms of content, journalism is becoming more demanding, including by creating a lot of space for big stories. The small news items virtually disappear.

Provincial news digitally

All volumes of the LC have been digitized. In 2007, 255 volumes were edited for digital access in one go. The Leeuwarder Courant Digital Archive Foundation, a collaboration between NDC Media Group and Tresoar, has focused on digitization.

Regional newspapers

Two regional newspapers are published in Friesland. The larger of the two is the LC and there is also the independent newspaper Friesch Dagblad. The newspapers have existed side by side since 1903, the first edition of the Friesch Dagblad. On July 1, 2013, the Friesch Dagblad will be integrated into the NDC, the group of which LC and DvhN are also part. The newspaper has an independent editorial staff.

NDC Media Group

The LC, like the Dagblad van het Noorden, is published by the Noordelijke Dagblad Combinatie. NDC Mediagroep is familiar with the Northern Netherlands like no other. The titles have been intertwined with this area since 1752. NDC Mediagroep is publisher of dozens of weekly newspapers, aimed at the provinces of Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe and Flevoland.
NDC also publishes the magazines Noorderland and Ambitie and owns radio stations Waterstad FM, Radio NL and Arrow Classic Rock Noord.

NDC/VBK

NDC is part of NDC/VBK.
In September 2012, book publisher Veen Bosch & Keuning (VBK) separated from its parent company NDC VBK. The book publishing business is continued by management and its employees. VBK, like NDC Mediagroep, is one of the three parts of NDC/VBK, is the largest publisher of general books in the Netherlands and has twelve publishers including Ambo Anthos, Amstel, Luitingh Sijthoff, Kok ten Have, Contact and Van Dale. The third arm is the educational publisher ThiemeMeulenhoff.

End of 2013

At the end of 2013, a lot changed for the LC. Several journalists and photographers were fired and the editorial staff was instructed to cooperate extensively with the editorial staff in Groningen.

End of 2014

In November 2014, another round of cuts for NDC was announced. It will mean redundancies at the Leeuwarder Courant once again. Editor-in-chief Hans Snijder charges a balloon that in 2019 the newspaper may be read digitally during the week and only appear on paper on Saturdays. He philosophizes about the end of the paper newspaper and the complete transition to digital. He thinks about the future of the newspaper with ,an open mind, curiosity and a common sense,. ,We have to innovate in order to continue publishing our journalistic work.,

January 2015

NDC continues to reorganize and 100 full-time jobs need to be eliminated. The Leeuwarder Courant consulted with the employees and proposed that the editorial staff work less to preserve jobs. Of the 100 jobs to be cut, 30 must come from the editorial staff. With a voluntary reduction of working hours of two hours per editor, 19 jobs can be saved. Of the 184 editors, 127 were willing to donate two hours.
The NDC must save costs because a repayment of 15 million euros must be made to house bank ING in February 2016.
