Wanda Foundation

Africa is a continent that could really use our help. The Wanda Foundation is an organization that focuses on Sierra Leone, Africa.

About the foundation

The chairman of the foundation is Josephine Smits who has Sierra Leonean descent. In July 2002, Smits traveled to her native country. She was haunted by the terrible things she saw there. Smits noted that women and children in particular lived in appalling conditions. Initially, Josephine Smits wanted to provide help on a small scale, but later she got the idea to set up a charity. The Wanda Foundation was founded at the end of 2004. In addition to Smits, the foundation’s board consists of three others: Eveline van de Heuvel (project employee), Luuk Smits (treasurer) and Brigitte Hilgers (board member). The foundation’s objective is to provide assistance in Sierra Leone in the areas of education, health care and agriculture.

The Wanda Foundation has reliable contacts in Sierra Leone who closely monitor the projects. The foundation’s website has a news page where you can keep an eye on how the donations are spent. The money donated goes directly to the population. The Wanda Foundation therefore believes that development aid has the best chance of success if the responsibility for the projects is placed with the local population.

The Wanda Foundation has a number of sponsors. It is striking that mainly schools sponsor the foundation.

Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa. Between 1991 and 2002 a civil war raged in the country. Thousands of child soldiers have been incited to commit atrocities during this war. Many people are traumatized by the events they have experienced. Not only is the humanitarian damage enormous, the material damage is also enormous.

Because there was war, the country’s economy stood still for years. This is the reason why Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world. There is hardly any money for reconstruction. People are mainly concerned with survival.

Completed projects

The Wanda Foundation has contributed to setting up a primary school in the village of Dia. This village is located in the Kailahun district that was severely affected during the civil war. The school was named Boyd Primary School. During the first school year in 2003/2004, approximately 350 children were registered. Today there are 700 children at Boyd Primary School.

Current projects

After the Wanda Foundation established a primary school in the village, it also believes it is important that children can enjoy further education. The foundation wants to build a vocational training center.

In addition to education, the foundation also values health. Lack of clean drinking water is one of the biggest health problems in the world, which is why the Wanda Foundation wants to realize a good drinking water supply in the village.
